Before you buy a car for Uber or Bolt, check it can still work: in 2026 Uber Chapchap only takes cars up to 10 years old, and Comfort up to 8. See our vehicle requirements guide.
How KRA works out the duty
- Find the CRSP. KRA’s list gives a retail price for each model — not what you paid at the auction.
- Take out the taxes inside it. The CRSP already includes duty, excise and VAT, so KRA divides them back out: CRSP ÷ 1.25 ÷ 1.35 ÷ (1 + excise) ÷ 1.16.
- Depreciate for age. 20% for a car in its second year, rising to 65% in its eighth. That gives the customs value.
- Charge the taxes on the customs value, in order:
| Vehicle | Import duty | Excise |
|---|---|---|
| Engine up to 1,500cc | 35% | 20% |
| Engine over 1,500cc | 35% | 25% |
| Petrol over 3,000cc or diesel over 2,500cc | 35% | 35% |
| Fully electric | 25% | 10% |
| Then VAT 16%, railway levy 2% and import declaration fee 2.5% on every vehicle. | ||
VAT is charged on the value plus the duty and excise — a tax on a tax — which is why the total is often more than half of the customs value.

Questions buyers ask
How does KRA calculate import duty on a used car?
KRA starts from the Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) in its published list, takes out the taxes that price already contains, and applies depreciation for the car’s age to get the customs value. On that it charges import duty (35%, or 25% for fully electric cars), excise duty (20% up to 1,500cc, 25% above, 35% for petrol over 3,000cc or diesel over 2,500cc, 10% for electric), VAT at 16%, the railway development levy at 2% and the import declaration fee at 2.5%.
What is CRSP?
The Current Retail Selling Price is KRA’s reference price for each make and model, published as a list. The current list took effect in July 2025 and covers over 5,000 models. KRA uses it instead of what you paid, so two buyers of the same car pay the same duty.
Is KRA’s July 2025 CRSP list still the current one?
Yes — it is the newest list KRA has published, and the one on KRA’s website. It replaced the 2019 list. The High Court briefly suspended it in July 2025 over public participation, and importers have been assessed on it since. When KRA publishes a new list, this calculator will be updated from it.
How old can an imported car be?
KEBS only admits right-hand-drive used vehicles first registered no more than seven years before the current year — from 1 January 2026, cars first registered in 2019 or later. The older the car within that window, the more depreciation KRA allows.
Is the duty the only cost of importing a car?
No. On top of KRA’s taxes come the car’s price and shipping, port and clearing charges, the clearing agent’s fee, and registration and number plates with NTSA. Ask your clearing agent for a full landed-cost quote.
Why is this different from other duty calculators?
Many calculators still use rates from before 2025 — 25% import duty, or an IDF of 2.25% and railway levy of 1.5%. This one follows the valuation template KRA published inside its own July 2025 CRSP workbook, which uses 35% import duty, excise by engine band, IDF 2.5% and railway levy 2%.
