When to sell your Uber car in Kenya: the age limits and the timing (2026)
Uber Kenya removes Chapchap cars at the end of the year they turn 12. How to work out a car’s earning years left, why its resale value falls before then, and when to sell.

Every car on Uber in Kenya has an end date. It is set by the year it was made, and it is published. That makes the question "when should I sell?" easier than it looks — and more costly to ignore, because the car's value falls well before the day it has to leave.
The two limits: to join, and to stay
Uber Kenya applies one limit when a car joins and another for how long it may stay:
| Category | To join in 2026 | To stay on |
|---|---|---|
| Uber Chapchap | 2016 or newer (up to 10 years old) | Until 31 December of the year the car turns 12 |
| Uber Comfort | 2018 or newer (up to 8 years old) | Uber has not published a separate rule |
| UberXXL | 2018 or newer (up to 8 years old) | Uber has not published a separate rule |
In Uber's own notice for Chapchap: "only vehicles that are 12 years old or newer will be eligible to remain on the Uber platform from 1st Jan 2026" — 2008–2013 cars stopped on 31 December 2025, 2014 cars stop on 31 December 2026, and 2015 cars on 31 December 2027.
Uber's earlier XL and UberX categories are already gone: no new cars from December 2024, and both ended on 31 December 2025.
Look up any year with can my car join Uber?, which now shows the Chapchap leaving date too.
Earning years left
The number that matters is how many full years the car can still work:
| Year of manufacture | Leaves Chapchap | Earning years left from January 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 31 Dec 2027 | 1 |
| 2016 | 31 Dec 2028 | 2 |
| 2017 | 31 Dec 2029 | 3 |
| 2018 | 31 Dec 2030 | 4 |
| 2019 | 31 Dec 2031 | 5 |
Bolt and Little set their own rules — check them in the driver apps — but do not plan on a car outliving Uber's limit by much: the owners who buy cars for ride-hailing all read the same notices.
Why the price falls before the end date
A buyer who wants the car for Uber is paying for its earning years. A car with one year left has, roughly, one year of daily amounts to earn back its price; with three years left it has three. So the ride-hailing value of a car does not fall gently with age — it drops as the leaving date approaches, and then the car is worth only what a private buyer will pay.
A simple way to see it: at KSh 1,500 a day for 26 days a month, a car earns about KSh 468,000 a year in daily amounts. An owner buying it with two years left will pay for roughly two years of that, less running costs and the risk. With one year left, half of that.
When to sell
- Sell while the next owner still has earning years. For a Chapchap car, selling with 18 months to two years left reaches the most buyers: other owners can still make it pay.
- Do not wait for December of the last year. Every owner with the same year of car is selling into the same few weeks.
- Time it with the papers. A car with fresh insurance, a recent inspection and a clean service record sells faster. A car about to need tyres or a big service is better sold before you pay for them — or priced for it.
- Line up the replacement first. A gap between selling and buying is a month with no daily amount. Check what a replacement costs with the import duty calculator or local prices, and the loan with the car loan calculator.
Keep the record that sells the car
Buyers pay more for a car whose history they can see: what it earned, how many days it was off the road, what was spent on it. Gariboss keeps that for every car — days paid, garage days, the running balance — which is also the honest answer to "how much does this car make?"

Questions owners ask
How old can a car be on Uber in Kenya?
To join in 2026: Chapchap takes cars made in 2016 or later, Comfort and XXL 2018 or later. Cars already on Chapchap may stay until the end of the year they turn 12 — 2014 cars until 31 December 2026, 2015 cars until 31 December 2027.
When should I sell my Uber car?
Before its leaving date, while a buyer can still earn from it — for a Chapchap car, with about 18 months to two years left. Its ride-hailing value falls as the end date approaches.
